I love New York City – who doesn’t? But when I think of The Big Apple, it doesn’t necessarily conjure images of cleanliness, efficiency or eco-consciousness. Quite the opposite, really, I remember wasteful neon lights, trash in the streets, heavy traffic and industrial smoke stacks off in the distance.
But at least one company is dedicated to turning it all around. Specht Harpman, an architectural firm in NYC, was named one of the “top 50 up-and-coming architectural practices from around the world” by Wallpaper Magazine. Led by Yale School of Architecture graduates Scott Specht and Louise Harpman, the firm created a completely self-sufficient zeroHouse. What’s more - the home can be ordered prefab and quickly assembled virtually anywhere.

The zeroHouse is beyond off-the-grid; several features give the structure smart advantages and efficient home comforts, while easily supporting four adult residents. The house sports a container-home look with sleek contemporary design. Amazingly, Specht Harpman came up with a plan for every last detail of efficient living, right down to the built-in furniture and storage items.
