Talk about building to match your environment! Take one part Robinson-Crusoe tree-house, one part Manta-ray and a dash of Mad Max’s Thunderdome and what you get is the Ecological Children Activity and Education Center deep in the jungle of Koh Kood, Thailand. Calling it just a “building” doesn’t seem to do it justice, but whatever you call it, add frickin’ awesome to the description.

Part of the property of a six-star resort called Sixth Senses Hideaway, the forward-thinking team at 24H-architecture designed the dome on a rocky slope perched on the edge of the Gulf of Siam. The roof is constructed mainly of local Thai bamboo and the interior is from River Red Gum wood from a nearby plantation. For structural support, rattan is used to reinforce the inner-dome.

Children of the upscale eco-resort are able to access the center for all kinds of activities. Most events are designed to raise the ecological awareness that is the hallmark of the Sixth Senses Hideaway. The dome houses an auditorium-cinema, live performances, lectures, art and music rooms, a library focused on environmental subjects and local history, a sleeping pod for toddlers, a giant slide and cooking cave complete with an organic vegetable garden so that the children can make their own lunches with the help of the on-site cook. I can hear the little munchkins now, “Enough with the learning stuff, let’s go down the slide again!”
