Spooky Swedish Accordion House

Accordion house

You might want to leave behind a trail of bread crumbs when you visit this strange little cottage deep in the forest of Sweden’s Glaskogen nature preserve. Looking more like a design from the Brother’s Grimm, the solar powered, off-grid “Dragspelhuset,” or “Accordion House,” was actually designed by its owners, Maartje Lammers and Boris Zeisser of 24H Architecture. The two transformed the original fisherman’s cabin (built in the 1800s) into a family summer vacation retreat.

Because of the nature preserve’s stringent building regulations that allowed only expansion of existing structures, the architects came up with this clever solution: the structure adjusts to the environment by extending or contracting, much like the billows of an accordion.

During the harsh winters, the building retracts and creates a double skin of insulation against the cold. During the summer, it unfolds like a butterfly for more living space that extends out over scenic Lake Ovre Gla via a series of tracks, pulley and retractable steel frame.
