There’s not a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to people’s opinions on Modernist architecture. Like Modern Art, sushi or Barack Obama as President, most folks either really, really love it, or really, really hate it. So if you prefer Thomas Kincaid over Picasso, Fish Sticks over Hamachi Roll and Caribou Barbie over Obama, perhaps you better move along, nothing to see here. But, for those of us who find Modernist structures in the vein of Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Theatre in Los Angeles more spellbinding than what’s going on inside, you can add the recently completed Steinhaus (Stone House) by acclaimed Austrian Architect, Günther Domenig to your architectural “bucket list” of must-see buildings, right up there with chart-toppers such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater House in Pennsylvania and Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Built on the shores of beautiful Lake Ossiach, near the city of Klagenfurt in his native
Austria, Domenig has designed a truly breathtaking piece of modern
architecture, which only took a mere 22 years and three million Euro to
complete - but who's counting? Considering it was originally conceived as his
personal residence, budget overruns and impatient clients weren’t an issue for
Steinhaus, so over the ensuing years, the project become more than Domenig’s
planned retirement cottage where he could sit on the porch in his rocking chair
feeding the ducks. It’s now a cultural icon, serving as a backdrop for
concerts, as well as attracting the attention of numerous magazine and
television features.
