Living on Display – A Modern Take on the Red Light Tradition

Working and living in Antwerp’s former red light district, Pieter Peerlings and Silvia Mertens decided to keep the “light” motif in more ways than one. The pair of innovative, maybe idiosyncratic, Belgian architects transformed an empty space between two buildings into a compact home studio and office for their business, Sculp(It). “Antwerp’s narrowest house,” as they like to call it, is four stories tall and about as wide as a sofa.

The couple erected a steel frame and connected the four wooden floors with a one-piece staircase. For tradition’s sake, they framed each window in black and “showcased” green, red and blue lighting. Rather sordid, don’t you think?
