The Modern Farmhouse?!

When you think farmhouse, what immediately comes to mind? The old, dilapidated red country box with white trim? We thought so. What the label doesn’t conjure up is anything out of the ordinary or modern in appearance. As with so many architectural trends, however, the farmhouse is coming back en vogue, but this time as something more vibrant and hip, more spacious and up-to-date.

Here’s a home designed by Belgium-based Wim Goes Architectuur, an award-winning firm. The walls are made of glass for 360-degree views of the surrounding pond and wildlife. The central living room opens out onto a floating platform – great for outdoor parties and taking in the scenery. There’s even an underground wine cellar. The architecture is inspired by Japanese and Finnish influences, particularly minimalism, open air spaces and full functionality.

This modern farmhouse is actually a green building pioneer. Located in Vermont and designed by Pill-Maharam Architects, the beautiful farmhouse was the very first certified platinum LEED project for the entire state. It has tons of eco-friendly and energy efficiency features built in, like the passive solar system, ground source heat pump, high efficiency lighting, sustainable heating & cooling and Energy Star appliances. The designing architects are also the residents of this zero-emission home. For them, it was born of a strong desire to create the kind of eco-responsible lifestyle they believe in.
