With its high-falutin’ rhetoric and sleek website design, meta-design: architecture’s ideology is reflected in their choice of the prefix “meta” in their company name. They describe it as meaning “beyond or about, transcending, transformed, more comprehensive, more highly organized or specialized ... it is also fun.”
Being a lover of words and well-executed design, I was intrigued enough to learn about the company -- and to see why it was pointed out to me as a company worth knowing about. (I must admit that I kept wanting to see pictures of the guys who founded it, though. Like, are they for real? I’ll bet they are, and that they’d be fun to share a cup of coffee with, too.)

Their intentions are certainly admirable, with a commitment to being ecologically responsive and lowering the energy footprint of all their building projects. They are LEED accredited and their clients span residential to commercial enterprises.
Looking at a couple of the commercial projects, like the Sweetwater Coffee Company and Blue Dot Cafe, or the Second Street Bakery, makes the company seem much more approachable. When it comes to residential, check out the unique walls in the Miller Residence project and elevated design of the Richmond House.

meta-d:a’s 5 Conditions for the Making of Architecture:*

Design is Intention - make a positive impression on a place
Material is Energy - the choices made have a profound effect in many areas

Architecture is Action - “architecture is purposeful poetry”
