The World's First Green Theme Park: Hollywood's Environmentaland

Written by Jennifer Heyns

Move over Walt Disney, here comes something greener.

Global Inheritance, an organization created to encourage activism and social responsibility among the world’s youth, has built an environmental theme park in Los Angeles, if you can believe it, on the world-famous corner of Hollywood & Highland. The park, which is celebrating its “soft launch” this month, is simply called Environmentaland.

Some of the regular features that visitors (can we call them Enviro-kateers?) will find in the park:

Some of these activities are not self-explanatory, so we'll wait for you cyber-savvy citizens to experience them firsthand and report back.

During their opening celebrations from August 15 to 22, there promises to be a lot of exciting activities, like solar musical performances and a competition among L.A. designers to come up with the most unique fashions using only donated clothing fabric. Director Robert Stone will be at the theme park on August 19th for the showing of his film, Earth Days, followed by a Q&A session. In keeping with their environmental encouragement, the park will allow guests who travel to Environmentaland via public transportation free admittance.

It remains to be seen how this well-intentioned theme park will fare. Will people be willing to travel from all across the U.S. to one of the most self-indulgent cities to participate in eco-friendly fun? The point of it all isn’t really to compete with the likes of Disneyland, Six Flags and Hershey Park, but rather to offer people the unique experience of seeing how their daily decisions have a combined and profound effect on our planet. It’s encouraging to see that Global Inheritance has put this much effort into making environmentalism fun - hopefully, today’s youth will put a little more thought into tomorrow. And when they leave, a little smarter and more conscientious, visitors can truly “go forth and prosper.”
