Adam Richards Architects

Written by Jennifer Heyns

Located in London, England, Adam Richards Architects is a team of six skilled architects who have immense respect for history and its preservation through structures as well as a fascination with finding contemporary use of space, light, and solutions to the ever-increasing environmental problems we, as a society, face today.

While they have a portfolio including several projects in the commercial, residential, community, and artistic realms, it is their consistently unique style that appeals most of all. A view of their photo gallery will reveal nothing commonplace.

One of the most impressive residential projects accomplished by the designers of Adam Richards Architects is a striking Portuguese restoration project. By name alone, Quinta da Serra suggests style and elegance, as does the view from afar, which reveals lush, thick gardens with a massive cascading stone stairway leading up to the home. The house is a stark contradiction between warm cobblestone sections and vibrant white divisions, yet the styles somehow complement each other in an aesthetically pleasing way as if the bold white is a welcome interruption from the stone serenity.

Besides restoring the more historic parts of the home’s exterior, the architects worked to reform the living space as well so to better suit the owner’s lifestyle.

In the House for Two Chefs, Adam Richards Architects had a unique challenge in that their clients were seeking to seam two houses together to form a proper nest for their growing family. Unfortunately they have only a model to exhibit the mastery of this project: no actual photos or before and after renderings are available online, but it’s clear that the result was something completely original and creative.

Following the lines of the roof and walls is something that can boggle the mind and yet conjure a knowing smile. The angles are just phenomenal. The ground floor was designed as an open box, with just glass to separate living space from nature. Just beyond the glass case that is the main floor is the trellis and garden.

The kitchen and living room were made to new heights while the dining room between exists under a canopy that supports the veranda enjoyed by inhabitants of the master suite.

The firm has undertaken a new residential project that will allow them to explore the creative practicality of their collective minds. The nearly one-acre project located in Romford will be home to 55 two-bedroom units, eight affordable housing units, a small amount of commercial space, a restaurant, and possibly (as if any more could be squeezed in) some work/live space.

This project will allow Adam Richards Architects to marry many of their styles into one undertaking. They will be able to seamlessly blend their artistic approach with their residential resourcefulness and commercial creativity.

What others have said

Now I think these are just plain cool. Nothing is more appropriate to modern architecture than creativity and breaking convention. Of course it should be done with a strong footing in usability and with a mind toward ecology, but after that I feel, 'the more original, the better.'

I must agree wholeheartedly with Dave. Creative architecture and the ability to provide brilliant living and entertaining spaces whilst embracing a variety of materials is simply brilliant. Some of the mass produced builders should take note.
