Reinventing the Wheel: Whirl Media Center by Phillips

Written by Jennifer Heyns

Talk about reinventing the wheel. Designer Jason Phillips has managed to do just that in a brilliant circular media center with built-in shelving.

The Phillips Whirl is a piece that looks like it may, at any moment, roll out the front door. Yet it somehow has the bold look of strength and permanence. The massive circle stands upright and stays put with the help of a platform base.

The base can be a simple shallow tray-like accessory that’s barely noticeable, or a larger furniture base that lifts the Whirl up off the floor, giving it a much grander appearance. The outer perimeter is made of wooden blocks that can be ordered in various wood stains or upholstery finishes.

The Whirl itself is illusionary, looking very much like a series of wooden blocks arranged in a large circle with nothing holding them together but sheer will. In the midst of this fantasy are three glass shelves that threaten to bring the whole system to its knees.

Although I can easily see a giant hamster running miles and getting nowhere on this piece, I can also see an elegant display of sculptures and conversation pieces sitting cozily in the Whirl – or perhaps a stereo, DVD collection or books.

Not only is the design modern, innovative and extremely attractive, but Phillips is making the piece available in different finishes so that it can easily fit the décor of any home.

Phillips is excited to have found a manufacturer for Whirl, which means that this piece may be able to roll its way into your home very soon.
