Samsung’s New French Door Refrigerator

Written by Euphrasia Carroll

The French Door Refrigerator is a CES Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Award honoree. CES is the annual Consumer Electronics Show, considered to be “the place to see, touch, feel, and understand the future of consumer technology.”

An announcement about the French Door Refrigerator’s honoree award said, “The new RFG299 French Door Refrigerator includes a convenient 7” LCD touch screen above the ice and water dispenser and delivers the industry’s largest internal storage at 28.5 cu. ft. in a standard footprint. Understanding that the kitchen is the true heart of the home, Samsung developed the LCD touch screen to give consumers easy access to calendars, schedules, showcase photos, nutrition facts, and unit conversions, allowing the refrigerator to act as an interactive, digital lifestyle centerpiece.”

The fun of learning about this sleek and stylish new fridge really begins by checking out the product website. First you get to meet Danny Boome, Chef and TV Host ... and there’s a marvelous green watermelon that drops onto the page, complete with sound effects -- you click on it to learn about the refrigerator’s food space. Then you can click on an image of the fridge itself, and if you’re even the least bit hesitant about mousing over various portions of the interior for animated descriptions, Danny is there to urge you on, in timed-sequence prompts that make you laugh, among other things. And after a few of these, even the most timid browser will start clicking around and discovering the wonders of this new refrigerator.

(Okay -- well, Samsung is a technology trendsetter, right? So why wouldn’t their product features be totally cool??)

With more than 4 cubic feet of additional storage space than in most standard models, you might ask yourself what you would do with all that extra space. Or -- the website preempts the question and when you click on the suggestion box for ideas, you’re treated to a variety of animated ideas complete with recipes.

The insulation in this model is thinner than in standard refrigerators, which allows for more space inside for food storage. Some of the shelves fold back to give you more height for tall things, like bottles of juice and cartons of milk.

The ice and water dispenser “has the look of a cafe espresso machine.” There’s a unique pocket in the freezer that lets your store products vertically for easier access to those frozen pizzas.

By this time, you’re so entertained that you can’t bring yourself to leave the site before watching 5 of Danny’s videos about food storage and preparation.

The only thing the product presentation didn’t go into detail about was the LCD touch screen feature. It’s clearly visible, but its ability to “act as an interactive, digital lifestyle centerpiece” isn’t explained -- and one might expect to be razzle-dazzled about that feature along with all the other ones. I guess this is a good way to encourage you to go find the real product on display somewhere near you, so you can satisfy your curiosity.

What others have said

Danny Boone’s comments were hilarious. I took your recommendation and checked out the Samsung site, and you are right, it is on of the best product demonstration pages I’ve seen. Thanks for showcasing this!

I like this for my really tight kitchen. I’m always banging the door of my current fridge against my kitchen island. The fact that the doors open from the center makes them half as wide and it’s perfect for me.
