Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes a product that is so unique and state-of-the-art that you’re just flabbergasted by the whole concept. The concept here is light-transmitting concrete, truly innovative and visually stunning.
The company – Litracon. The inventor & founder – Hungarian architect Aron Losonczi. Company location - Hungarian town of Csongrad.
Transparent concrete, as a building material, is something that the founder of Litracon knew had been a long-standing wish for architects.
About this new building material – thousands of optical glass fibers form a matrix and run parallel to each other between the two main surfaces of each block. The fibers mingle in the concrete because of their insignificant size and they become a structural component as a kind of modest aggregate. So, the surface of the blocks remains homogeneous concrete. Load-bearing structures can be built with these blocks and the blocks can be produced in various sizes and with embedded heat-isolation.
This new product, then, is a combination of optical fibers and fine concrete and can be produced as building blocks or panels. The fibers blend into the concrete and become part of the material like small pieces of aggregate. You not only get two materials, glass in concrete, but a third new material, which is homogeneous in its inner structure and on its main surfaces, too.
Illuminate Your Walls
Litracon can be used as building material for interior and exterior walls. If sunshine illuminates the wall structure, then eastern or western placement is recommended; the rays of the rising or setting sun will hit the optical glass fibers in a lower angle and the intensity of the light will be bigger. Besides the traditional applications of a wall, the light transmitting concrete can also be used as wall covering illuminated from the back. Check out this illuminated interior wall at Montblanc boutique in Tokyo.
Watch Your Pavement Shine at Sunset
This product can be used as flooring – a passable surface illuminated from below. During the day it looks like typical concrete pavement but at sunset the paving blocks begin to shine – and in different colors.
Get Creative with Design
The building units are versatile and can be used in many areas of design. Two successful designs using the light transmitting concrete were a jewel and a concrete bench. You can also create a logo with colorful figures, inscriptions, and pictures.
A Lamp and Conversational Piece
The LitraCube lamp is, without a doubt, a great conversation piece. Litracon has built many custom built lamps and delivered them all over the world. The lamp consists of four identical pieces of concrete and, due to its special geometry, the pieces form a stable structure without fixing them together.
Artsy Reception Desk

If you really want to create a look that stands out you should opt for this artsy and vogue reception desk that lights up in the front and the sides.
If you’re looking for something different, something that will be a source of inspiration and awe for years to come, Litracon is your answer.
i want saw adout the this material
Concrete is notoriously labelled as a boring and cold building material, but this certainly can turn its reputation around. I can already think of a few projects using this concrete.
I am delighted to have this information and would like to know more about it. This is indeed a great invention.

At least got someone who is in favour of concrete. Very useful post.
When concrete appears to be used just to cut costs....it's a breath of fresh air for someone to re-invent it! Love the idea of a mesh of fibres that connect with each other when assembled. I suppose that its only practical on new builds. So won't be specifying it on any bathroom floors just yet!
I would never of thought or believed that this was possible. Wow! I knew I like concrete as a building source now it has just escalated to the top of the list!
What type of remodeling job are you interested in?
