Floating Kitchen in High-Gloss Shine

I've had days where I felt tied down to my kitchen, but never have I seen a kitchen that looks like it needed to be physically tied down, else it float away. Italian designer Daniele Lago has put forth a new line of high-gloss kitchen cabinetry and furniture that literally rises above the rest.

The Nuove Cucina 36e8 is like nothing you’ve seen before. Every single piece hovers above the floor or floats upon the wall. Imagine an entire kitchen where there are no toe kicks, no base moldings, no space for fallen food or other items to roll underneath and start to rot.

There aren’t even any hulking appliances skulking around the kitchen taking up massive floor space. Each piece is designed to delight the eye and create a sense of illusion. Several of the pieces even have the ability to mask small appliances.

High-gloss cabinetry had a brief moment in the limelight in the 1990s, but only as white (or occasionally black) melamine. Lago has brought shine back en vogue not only by adding an entire palette of vibrant colors to the selection, but also by giving it the unique feature of being legless—or at least appearing so.

Most of the cabinetry appears to float by being installed several inches above the floor and attached directly to a wall. The wall cabinets are fairly typical in placement, but by using shorter cabinets over the traditional 30-inch height they also appear to be floating.

What’s most unusual, however, is the semblance of a floating kitchen island.  This is where Lago’s genius really shines. Naturally, an island must be attached to something.  With no wall present, and not being tall enough to reach the ceiling, something had to be done to give the cabinets support without shattering the illusion of weightlessness.

The answer was finishing the cabinets with clear panels that would reach from the floor to the cabinet bottoms, giving them the support they need while still allowing light to pass through and becoming virtually invisible from farther away.

Not everything must float, however, Lago did add in some more traditional pieces.  Standard height base cabinets and some tall cabinet models serve as pantries or refrigerator masks.
