The Comb-Over Carpet: Flooring with a Bald Spot

Growing old gracefully. It’s something we all vow, at one point or another in our lives, to do. And yet when it comes down to it, we all do a little fighting, kicking and screaming. No, I will not go gently into that great night. But every now and then we are reminded that with age comes wisdom, a sense of self, a more subtle beauty that has to be studied and understood in order to be appreciated.
The Comb-Over Carpet is just crazy enough to remind us of these things. The bald spotted flooring solution is yet another of those indications that some of us aren’t as ripe as we used to be, and the comb-over is the oft-teased attempt to reclaim that youthful look of shagginess.
In what could also be a taunting solution, designer Meirav Peled Barzilay of Tel Aviv has taken the comb-over from head to foot, literally. Her new Comb-Over Carpets are a reminder of our immortality and of finding new beauty in age, she says.
The carpets are made with soft and warm felt strips that resemble a shag carpet. What’s even more unique, however, are that they come complete with bald spots – places in the carpeting where you can see straight down to the canvas. These bald spots are adjacent to massive strands of varied-length felt strips. It’s like a choose-your-own adventure book and I bet kids would love losing themselves in the comb-over.
You can take the comb-over and hide your bald spot, bunch it up and make a fluffy pillow or lose yourself in the strands as you pile them around you in a makeshift blanket.
Barzilay says her innovation is a way to show people how beauty can be seen in the blemishes of old age. Perhaps next will be liver-spot lounge chairs or crow’s feet countertops.
