Cool Off-Kilter Dutch House

Off-Kilter house

Designed by pasel.kunzel architects, this single-family residence was created a bit topsy-turvy. The ground floor is one large open area designed for work and play, while the living area and outdoor terrace are nestled two stories above at the top of the house. The middle level has been reserved for the private spaces, i.e. the bedrooms and bathrooms.

What’s most intriguing is the way that nothing quite matches up, yet is in perfect harmony. For example, the windows and doors are the same exact size, but have been positioned in an asymmetrical design to offset each other.

The lines of the architecture appear to be clean, simple and straightforward, yet when you take in the structure as a whole, you begin to see some optical illusions at play. The large expanses of glass with their shimmery shutters appear to be installed haphazardly—slightly off their 90-degree angles.

Inside, the way the stairs wrap around walls and beams gives that same slightly off-kilter appearance. Take a look from another angle, however, and everything is just as it should be.
