After Hurricane Katrina, many Americans are at least aware of the devastating potential of natural phenomena, including the awesome displacement of survivors, the subsequent homelessness, and need for temporary housing (preferably not contaminated travel trailers). Inspired by a powerful and deadly earthquake in his own country, Chinese designer Ming Tang has developed a sustainable and flexible shelter that could act as temporary post-earthquake housing.

His foldable bamboo and paper house was submitted as part of Urban Re:Visions' Re:Construct design contest. The idea was to design a shelter that was sustainable, could go up very fast, and be easily moldable to fit individual needs and geographical requirements. Tang's bamboo house would be made from paper fibers, water, and cement. It can be built and pre-assembled at the factory, folded into a relatively small package, and transported via truck to wherever it is needed.
Tang's design won honorable mention in the Urban Re:Visions contest. While it is odd, and remains in the design phase as well, the bamboo and paper house is very creative and who knows, it just might work.
These are such space age looking homes! We just finished writing about another type of bamboo construction house that was built in the Henan Province of China, read our story here;\r\nhttp://www.oureverydayearth.com/2009/12/03/houses-made-from-bamboo-thanks-to-glubam/
How durable are your foldable bamboo houses and how much do they cost. We are starting an international standard resort & spa on the outskirts of Bangalore. We are planning to provide 50-60 wooden/bamboo cottages of 40 & 50m2 each. Many other wooden structures are also planned like a 1200m2 spa, Bar & restaurant 250m2, pool bar & so on. But please let us know how deeply you would like to involve yourself with this project. Please send us all the details by mail.

This is a sweet idea of a bamboo house. For use in severe emergencies I could imagine it being very useful.
