AstroTurf Fun House

Wow. Not only is the Amalia House unique in that it's covered from roof to foundation in artificial grass (and is the first home in Austria to do so), but the shape is unusual as well with the widest section of house cantilevered over the narrowest.

While it’s not uncommon for second stories to extend over the ground floor, this particular extension has odd angles serving as roof slope and continuing to the home’s edge. This makes the entire house look as if a strong wind could have it blowing end-over-end at any moment.

The house has been named, by the owners, for their grandmother, Amalia. It serves as a gathering place for a family spread far and wide across Austria.

GRID Architekten designed this house to be in a sort of camouflage. However, while the introduction of artificial grass as an exterior finish might cause it to blend with its surroundings, every other aspect of the house screams for attention.

Both the interior and exterior of Amalia are set at odd angles, adding to the intrigue. While the main section of house provides for gathering places and entertainment, a room off to the side looks to offer a tranquil seclusion for the individual seeking solace.

This room, however, is the most intriguing in the house, with only its floor set at a usual angle. Each of the other walls and ceiling are set akimbo, making the room appear as if it were a section of a fun house. In opposition to its unique architecture, the room is fairly sparse with only a shelf and a chair present.

It could serve as a quiet reading room or napping nook. Yet spin the chair around and you might find yourself in the cusp of a family gathering, as the room opens up into the kitchen and dining area in the main section of the house.
