Musical opportunities happen in Munetsugu Hall. In the middle of Naka Ward, Nagoya, Japan, the immaculate 310-seat concert hall found its harmonious home. The space was planned out by award-winning architect, educator and writer, Norihiko Dan. Its exterior is a series of horizontal lines and clean color.

Inside, the designer included stark-white, molded walls for a visual appeal of exquisite purity.

Beyond the image, this philanthropic venture showed up in the midst of dwindling government and private sector’s funds that once supported spaces to showcase Japan’s talent. The brainchild of Tokuji Munetsugu and his wife, Naomi, the couple donated profits from their successful business, Ichibanya Company Ltd. Owners of more than 1,000 curry and pasta restaurants, they fully funded Munetsugu Hall, along with a nonprofit to sustain welfare, sports and the arts.

The building makes available a place for musicians to perform and audiences to take pleasure in their music. Competition to nurture up-and-coming violinists is also being offered. The hope is for a successful future. Munetsugu said, “I want young people to find a tune which can change their life. It is really hard to make profits by operating a hall. I’m going to commit to sowing seeds this and next year.”
