Light-Up Rectangular Melbourne Stadium Mimics Crowd Energy

Written by Lynn DeRocco

To me, this resembles a floating mass of photoluminescent sea anemones, but to Cox Architects and Aussie sports fans, it’s the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

The venue will debut to the public in 2010 as a rugby and soccer arena able to hold 31,500 screaming spectators. And the louder their enthusiasm, the more spectacular the over-$200 million structure will look. Embedded with thousands of programmable LEDs, the sea creature-like dome will illuminate in tempo according to the crowd’s enthusiasm, and like the Empire State Building, the colors can be mapped out on the “bio-frame” as well.

No strangers to designing sports facilities, the people at Cox know how to impress the throngs with venues that excite as much as the events themselves. There will, of course, be bars and restaurants for patrons, as well as training facilities and offices for those who are paid to entertain them.
