Looking for a unique vacation? If you’ve never thought of heading to China for a little R&R, you may want to think again. Phoenix Island, a manmade isle connected solely by a narrow strip of land to the island of Sanya, China, is currently being designed by MAD Architects as a luxury resort. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Here are the plans: the island will be lush, vegetative and dotted with a few very luxurious and modern buildings, which will serve as the resort’s yachting clubhouse, hotel, apartments and shops.

The hope is that this several-star resort island will become a hub of elite tourism. Four buildings emerge from the island, resembling surf boards with a slight metallic leopard print covering the façade. A fifth building towers over them, looking very much like the crown jewel of the isle, especially with the sun gleaming on the sleek metallic exterior.

On the opposite end of the 365,000-square meter land mass is the yacht clubhouse, a dwarf by comparison, yet every bit as modern in design. It looks like a white ceramic masquerade ball mask. The clubhouse is perched on the end of the isle with massive spokes erupting from the island’s edge, providing an aquatic parking lot for yacht-traveling tourists.
What appears to be a narrow sand bar surrounds half of the yacht lot to give large cruise liners a place to dock and allow their guests passage to the island.

Overall, the planning of this exclusive vacation destination is scenic and natural, yet completely modern and foreign–almost alien–in appearance. This is not your textbook China. In fact, in viewing the crystal blue waters surrounding the island and modern architecture emerging from the landscape, there isn’t one semblance of traditional China to be found.
