Casa BC: A Black-and-White Criss-Cross Work of Art

The sheer scope of Casa BC in Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico is overwhelming and indulgent, but there are some outstanding architectural features worth checking out.
GLR Arquitectos utilized the dramatic landscape surrounding the home by creating a bit of drama themselves in the unique shape of Casa BC and the elements that give it character. Built in a scenic valley with mountains all around, the house has breathtaking views, while at the same time creating a powerful effect with a section of the house that seems to loom above just short of toppling down into the visual chasm below.
The house gives the appearance of a core structure with wings jutting out at different angles. It looks very much like the structure is venturing out into the landscape, trying to take it over in all directions at once.
The white concrete exterior of the ground floor breaks free from the earth and is in stark contrast to the black granite formations that top it. What’s most striking is that the second story does not mirror the first in shape or size, but fully conjures its own identity by emerging into odd angles and bursting out around the concrete below.
Even though the granite sections of the house seem to almost smother the home’s base, the white concrete comes out on top in the end, emerging through the center with a narrow tower-like structure that looks down upon the granite, triumphant.
In other areas, a vast amount of glass and steel are utilized to give sections of the home a more invisible feel, allowing the owners to have a greater sense of intermingling with nature. While being able to take further advantage of the breathtaking views, the large expanses of glass also take away a bit of the sense of total privacy, adding to the allure of this mammoth residence.
